UFO Digest Latin America Correspondent

Spain’s cinema of the fantastic has upheld a lengthy and curious relationship with the subject the we cover in our blog, which happens to be cryptozoology. As we know, all manner of unknown monsters have appeared in Spanish movie projects on various occasions, with more or less fortunate results.

Among all the monsters, we find that some of them hail from the study of unknown creatures: yetis, all types of dinosaurs, coelecanths, giant squid, apemen and other cryptids have already carved a small niche for themselves on the Spanish big screen. They sometimes appear as the sole protagonists of the film and in merely token roles in other instances, yet always adding an original or exotic ingredient to the plot.

Tomorrow, Dimension Insólita will be discussing the story of this minor sub-genre from its very start: 1961’s bizarre Julia y el celacanto (Julia and the Coelecanth) to the Basajaun-inspired films that are about to be released. The show can be heard on 106.6 FM – Madrid (Radio Las Aguilas) or clicking on the link at the website (www.criptozoologos.blogspot.com)

To show that popular culture’s interest in matters cryptozoological is not restricted to the silver screen, Javier Resines goes on to mention a comic drawn by Pernán Goñi, an art docent at Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum. He has taught numerous courses on comic book art hand has contributed his work to various organizations (his projects can be viewed at www.pernangoni.com/blog/). One of these comic strips concerns the basajaun and is written in Basque. Javier gives us the following translation: “So you’re the Basajaun? I thought you’d be much bigger...you look like a stuffed animal, ha,ha!...Excuse me...”
